Hepatology in Hepatitis C On-Demand Program

THE PROBLEM

Hepatitis C is an invisible epidemic in the U.S. prompting the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to recommend that all baby boomers born between 1945 and 1965 be tested for hepatitis C.

Treatment protocols for standard treatment are changing rapidly- allowing those who failed previous treatment and those who have not yet been treated to qualify for antiviral treatment. However, side effects of standard treatment are still preventing those who utilize it from responding and care providers are "warehousing” patients with mild disease for later treatment when new drugs with fewer side effects are approved. Deciding who needs and does not need current treatment is not a clear-cut case and varies widely from provider to provider.

Those who may not qualify for standard treatment and have progressed liver disease (cirrhosis) remain at increased risk for liver failure and primary liver cancer.

All of these issues are explored in depth in this course, giving you the edge with your chronic hepatitis C patients, whether they are seeking support during standard treatment or are not on standard treatment and need anti-fibrotic support or they just need an opinion about a course of action.
